Tropical Cyclone Season – Summer 2026
We were warned it was going to be an active tropical storm system. Surely it is. As of today August 23, 2026 we had Hurricane Lala which came very close to Hawaii and caused havoc and severe damage to places on the Big Island last weekend (August 15 – 17). The southern end of the Big Island was most severely impacted with major flood and wind damage.
The other islands also sustained some damage in certain areas, mainly blown down trees and flooding too. Here in the urban core we got at worst some heavy rain and gusts of stronger than normal winds. Last weekend I took a walk in the morning to grab the following pictures of the weather from Tropical Storm / Hurricane Lala.

Lala’s tropical storm gusts and rain were the worst we got in the Rycroft Street area. 8-16-2026.
For all practical purposes the Honolulu urban core near Ala Moana Center in the Keeaumoku area received only minimal impacts such as wind, rain, minor flooding and power outages. I consider ourselves lucky to escape the brunt of this.

So far named storms that impacted the island included Hurricane Lala, and minimal tropical storm Moke. Two other storms from the east pacific threatened the island but either fizzled out of changed directions as they got closer.
